Pipelines are the most environmentally friendly and safest way of transporting large amounts of ethylene. The amount of ethylene transported annually by the ARG pipeline system is equivalent to 2,300,000 trucks driving on European roads.

The highest requirements are set down by legislators, regulatory bodies and the public for the routing and operation of ethylene pipelines and implemented by the operators. The pipeline system may not be affected by environmental influences nor by events such as floods. An impact on people and the environment is also excluded thanks to a safety concept that includes constant surveillance by a control centre using the latest technology.

The pipeline system is emission-free and the transport of ethylene has very low energy needs. To minimize interference with existing structures, the ARG pipeline has been installed over long distances in a trench with other lines. Thanks to this pipeline routing and an environmentally friendly approach to repairs and modifications, interference with nature and landscape is largely avoided. The pipeline system has been set up to ensure neither soil nor water is polluted.

Ethylene is produced in refineries through thermal cracking in particular of the oil product crude petroleum (naphtha). Ethylene (ethene) is also produced in nature (plants, etc.), for example by fruits and vegetables.
